The 8th Antalya Festival certainly was an memorable event.

ASPENDOS (BELKIS) - THE CITY

According to the Hellenic traditions, Aspendos was built during the leadership of Mophsos by the Colonists who came from Argos. The city was originally known as Estvedia - a name derived from a king known as either Asiawadia or Asitawada.

At the beginning of the 5th century BC, except for the settlement by Side, Aspendos was the only town minting silver coins. In 330 BC, Alexander the Great invaded the lower part of the city. During the Hellenistic Era, Aspendos as well as Side was a prosperous residential location. In 190 BC, following the Magnesium Sipylum Wars, Aspendos established a good relationship with Rome. On the death of Attalos III, Aspendos was assimilated into the state of Asia under Roman sovereignty. The ruins of today belong to this era.

ASPENDOS THEATER

The city of Aspendos is located in Pamphylia, and the theater is situated in the south of the acropolis. The maximum capacity of the theater is 9000 people. It was designed by the Architect Zeno during the era of Marcus Aurelius in 161-180 AD The orchestra in the form of a circle is located between the auditorium - known as the cavea - and the stage area. The cavea is divided into two by a horizontal passage called a diasoma. The lower cavea is divided into 9 separate sections with 10 stairs, the upper cavea is divided into 20 separate sections with 21 stairs. The audience reaches the cavea through the vaulted (paradoi) entries located on both sides of the stage.

There is a gallery at the very top of the seating area in the shape of a half circle formed from 59 vaults. It is connected to the stage area by sidewalls, creating a majestic sight. There is an additional gallery designed to support the cavea; the upper level is reserved for important guests, whose names are inscribed on the seats. The remaining seating areas are allocated to the public.

The drainage channels constructed around the orchestra area help to collect rainwater. During the 3rd century a stone parapet was constructed and used an arena surrounding the orchestra area.

The stage areas are constructed out of stone blocks, with five entrances available at the stage level for the artists. The stage looks like a two storied structure decorated by twenty Ionic and Corinthian columns. Each floor has many niches supported by smaller columns.

The plays are presented on a wooden platform (proscenium) located in front of the stage. However the gladiator fights during the Roman period were more important than plays.

THE CITY PLAN OF ASPENDOS IN THE ROMAN ERA

1-3 The gates of the City. Though protected very well, the gates are almost totally buried in the soil.
4 The Angora surrounded by structures is open to the public.
5 The Basilica. Today only the foundation remains.
6 The part of the Basilica set aside for the conduct of city affairs.
7 The covered market place, formed by a hallway 70 meters in length with parallel stores.
8 Bouleterion. A structure in the form of a covered auditorium, located near the Basilica.
9 Nymphation (foundation), the only remaining part of the fountain with its very well preserved front side. The rich embroideries on the upper frames can still be seen today.
10 Exedra. The insertion with its open top was used as a public recreation area.
11 The Arch located between the road to the East Gate (2) and the Angora (4).
12 Aqueduct (water arch). One of the best preserved aqueducts in Turkey from the Roman period.
13-14 Vaulted structures, possibly used as bath houses and gymnasium.
15 This majestic theater is the most neatly preserved example of its kind.
16 The Stadium.

ISTANBUL FOUNDATION FOR CULTURE AND ARTS: 29 YEARS WITH THE ARTS

The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts was founded in 1973 under the leadership of Dr. Nejat F. Eczacibasi, who had conceived the idea of a festival of the arts, similar to those held annually at certain times of the year in a number of European cities, to be held in Istanbul. Thus, the 1st Istanbul Festival was held from 15 June to 15 July 1973, on the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey.

From its first inception the Istanbul Festival has aimed at including in its programs the finest examples of artistic creativity in all disciplines of art from both Turkey and abroad, as well as seminars, conferences and lectures. The Istanbul Festival was accredited as a member of European Festivals Association. In 27 years, the Festival has hosted world renowned artists & groups from La Scala Philharmonic (Muti), New York Philharmonic (Mehta & Masur) to Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Sawallisch); from Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (Kremer) to Scottish Chamber Orchestra (Mackerras & Hickox); from Tokyo String Quartet to Hilliard Ensemble; from Aldo Ciccolini to Ivo Pogorelich; from Yehudi Menuhin to Itzhak Perlman; from Julian Lloyd Webber to Mischa Maisky; from Narciso Yepes to Christopher Parkening; from Leyla Gencer to Montserrat Caballé; from Bolshoi Ballet to American Ballet Theater.

Within the context of the 7th Centennial celebration of the Founding of the Ottoman Empire, Vivaldi's Bajazed opera was selected for an exclusive performance. World famous violinist, director and musicologist Fabio Biondi brought this lengthy opera to a powerful two and a half hour performance. Attracting a great deal of attention, this world premiere version of Bajazed was staged at the Hagia Eireni Museum for the 27th International Music Festival.

From 1984 onwards film screenings included in the International Istanbul Festival programs began to be organized as a separate activity in April as the International Istanbul Film Festival, and in 1985 one national and one international (Golden Tulip) competitive sections were included in its program. In 1989, it was officially recognized by FIAPF (Fédération Internationael des Associations des Producteurs de Film) as a "Competitive, Specialised Festival". Beginning from 1996 "Lifetime Achievement" and "Honorary" Awards began to be presented to local and international cineastes, actors and actresses such as Robert Wise, Turkan Soray, Gillo Pontecorvo, Michelangelo Antonioni, Claude Sautet, Elia Kazan, Peter Greenaway, István Szabo, Muhterem Nur, Faruk Kenc, Bertrand Blier, Jerry Schatzberg and Abbas Kiarostami to name a few.

The theatrical contribution, which had originally formed one branch of the International Istanbul Festival, was reorganized in 1989 as a third regular activity of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. The International Istanbul Theater Festival is held in May, with a program comprising the finest examples of the works of both foreign and Turkish theater companies. The Theater Festival hosted world renowned groups, companies and directors; including Piccolo Teatro Di Milano, Attis Theater, Berliner Ensemble, Centre Dramatique National d'Orleans, Royal National Theater, Robert Wilson, Yuri Lyubimov, Janusz Wiesniewski, Stephane Braunschweig, Theodorus Terzopoulos, Heiner Goebbels, Andre Willms, Ian Holm, Diana Rigg, Alla Demidova to name a few. Beginning from 1997 "Honorary Awards" began to be presented and Giorgio Strehler, Yildiz Kenter, Yuri Lyubimov, Melih Cevdet Anday, Necdet Mafi Ayral and Robert Wilson were awarded since then.

Another unique IFCA project of 1999 was realised in cooperation with the renowned Greek Theater Director Theodoros Terzopoulos. The result of this collaboration was the Heracles Trilogy, which made its world premiere at the 11th International Istanbul Theater Festival. This project brought Turkish and Greek actors together and was presented within the program of the Theater Olympics in Japan.

In 1987 the various national and international exhibitions devoted to the latest trends in contemporary art were discontinued and the 1st Istanbul Biennial was held. The concept of the 2nd International Istanbul Biennial in 1989, coordinated by Beral Madra was "Contemporary Art in Traditional Spaces". The theme of the 3rd International Istanbul Biennial in 1992 was "Production of Cultural Difference" under the direction of Vasif Kortun. The theme of the 4th International Istanbul Biennial curated by Réne Block was ORIENT/ATION and about 123 artists from 51 countries exhibited their works. The 1997 Biennial's curator, Rosa Martinez chose the theme as "On Life, Beauty, Translation & Other Difficulties". The theme of the 6th International Istanbul Biennial was "The Passion and the Wave" and 56 artists from 32 countries exhibited their works at the 1999 Biennial curated by Paolo Colombo.

Beginning from 1986, a special section was dedicated to jazz within the International Istanbul Festival. From 1994 onwards the event began to be organized as a separate activity. Since then the International Istanbul Jazz Festival hosted many masters of jazz, from Keith Jarrett to Jan Garbarek; from Manhattan Transfer to Wynton Marsalis; from Dizzy Gillespie to Modern Jazz Quartet. With the announcement of a separate Jazz Festival, the name of the International Istanbul Festival was changed to International Istanbul Music Festival which carries on its activities as a specialized summer festival of classical music, ballet, opera and traditional music.

The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts which celebrated 25th year of its establishment in 1997, organizes the International Istanbul Film Festival in April, the International Istanbul Theater Festival in May, the International Istanbul Music Festival in June-July, the International Istanbul Jazz Festival in July and the International Istanbul Biennial in the autumn every two years.

11th INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL

8 - 18 JULY 2004
Incorporating many forms of music, like jazz, pop rock, World Music and electronica, the festival offers great musical experiences at the vibrant venues and clubs of Istanbul

Jazz fans in Turkey, will most readily remember the 8th of July 1984. On that very day, hearing that Chick Corea and Steve Kujala were going to give a concert in Ataturk Cultural Center as part of the Istanbul Festival, they had raided the box offices, and tickets were immediately sold out. On the day of the concert there was an unprecedented crowd outside the ACC, and many people missed it as there were no tickets left. Chick Corea made his own surprise at the end of the concert when he brought Gayle Moran on stage. This unforgettable concert was the beginning of things to come. It was a reminder that jazz should occupy a bigger part in the Istanbul Festival, and that the musical spectrum of the Festival should be extended to cover many other musical styles.

As years went by the emphasis on jazz in the Istanbul Festival increased. The first real rock concerts in Istanbul were held in the Open-air Theater as part of the Istanbul Festival program. The number of concerts under the heading of jazz, rock and pop grew in number every year. Then the line was crossed in 1988 and the legendary Miles Davis presented unforgettable musical feasts in the Open-air Theater three nights in a row. He was followed by Dizzy Gillespie, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Stan Getz, Ornette Coleman and many others. In 1993, the number of concerts under the title Jazz/ Pop/folk had reached 14. This section itself had grown far beyond the framework of the festival. The same year, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts held the first stadium concert in Turkey (Bryan Adams), and then played host to Sting and the Scorpions in the Inönü Stadium.

As the years went by, " jazz " also went beyond the limits of its literal meaning, and the Board of Directors of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts announced that the 1st International Istanbul Jazz Festival was to be held as a separate event. The festival was planned to be an activity embracing concerts of many styles of music in addition to jazz; like rock, pop, blues, reggae, new age, etc. It would surpass the boundaries of the concert sites, and question the boundary separating the people who produce music from those who consume it. In short, it would be more than a series of concerts. The result has been seven years of success with over 250 concerts by hundreds of performers and guest artists at ten different venues and clubs…A jubilant festival taking place in the very heart of the city!

One of the best organized festivals in Europe, the International Istanbul Jazz Festival, has brought renowned artists like Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Massive Attack, Bjork, Deep Forest, Dead Can Dance, Loreena McKennitt, Suzanne Vega, Patti Smith, Bobby McFerrin, Randy Crawford, The Manhattan Transfer, Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, Goran Bregovich, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau to Istanbul's music lovers. With its boundless energy it has become one of the most important events on the Istanbul cultural scene.

The International Istanbul Jazz Festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation For Culture and Arts, will take place from the 5th through the 20th of July, 2002. The festival, in addition to standard and contemporary jazz acts, includes many other forms of music in the program, from rock to pop, Salsa to Rai, electronica to acid jazz and hip hop. This event offers a remarkable variety of great music experiences at the vibrant venues and clubs of Istanbul.

The International Istanbul Jazz Festival is a member of European Jazz Festivals Organization (EJFO) and over the past 8 years has hosted hundreds of renowned artists from all over the world.

Festival's season will encounter the audiences on the streets, in the lively clubs and at the finest venues in Istanbul. Concerts will again be held at the monumental Open Ar Theater, freeing the spirit of music from conventional concert halls.

In summer 2002, get ready to encounter the shows from worldwide headliners as well as discovering upcoming talents!
